Scenario one: NFP prints below 75,000 — a weak number. This confirms that the oil shock from the Hormuz closure has begun damaging the US labour market. Prices rising, jobs falling — textbook stagflation. In this scenario the Federal Reserve cannot raise rates to fight inflation because doing so would crush an already weakening jobs market. That paralysis is extremely bullish for gold. Expect gold to push toward $4,800 and possibly beyond on a weak print. 24K would move toward $154.30/gram or higher.
Scenario two: NFP prints above 150,000 — a strong surprise. This tells markets the economy is holding up better than feared. Hawks at the Fed get ammunition to keep rates high or even discuss hikes. The dollar strengthens, gold gives back some of this week’s gains — likely a $30 to $60 per ounce retreat. 24K might dip back toward $150.40/gram. This would be a buy-on-the-dip moment, not a structural reversal.
Scenario three: NFP in line with expectations, 60,000–100,000. Gold holds near current levels. The Iran deal remains the dominant narrative. Gold consolidates and the market looks toward next week’s CPI data on May 12 for the next catalyst.
The ISM manufacturing report this week already showed its Employment index at 46.4 — a 2026 low — and Prices Paid at 84.6, the highest since April 2022. If the NFP confirms that pattern across the whole economy today, scenario one becomes the base case.
